THE RAIN FAILS TO KEEP ARTHINGTON’S UNBEATEN RUN AFLOAT, AS NORTH STAINLEY CRUISE TO VICTORY
Spanning almost a season and a half, including the entirety of a memorable 2018 campaign, Arthington’s terrific unbeaten run has finally come to an end. Despite a day of intermittent showers and the odd downpour, the ACG was able to host a full match, with the 1st XI taking on North Stainley’s 1st XI, the away side eventually running out comfortable winners in a low-scoring contest.
For the second week running, Arthington lost the toss and were put in to bat. Rain threatened throughout the first innings and did lead to two brief interruptions, but it was not enough to dampen a strong North Stainley bowling attack. Once again, Arthington fielded a considerably different side, only 5 of whom played the majority of last season’s fixtures in the 1st XI. The new opening pair of Shabir Ahmed and Naveed Andrabi started well by accumulating 37, but Andrabi ended up mistiming a shot to be caught at cover for 26. Ahmed and new man at the crease Khamrosh Khan added another 17, before the opener was dismissed, causing the figurative heavens to open as Arthington proceeded to lose their next 7 wickets for only 14 runs, including a hat-trick from the North Stainley first change bowler, who finished the innings with impressive figures of 6-3-12-6. It was certainly lovely weather for ducks and Arthington managed to make 5 in total. However, the final partnership of Mohsin Ali and Zameer Ahmed were still able to secure a solitary batting point, Ali eventually being bowled for a courageous 21, including four boundaries. The innings finished after 27.1 overs: 91 all out.
Despite having a low total to defend, Arthington’s bowling and fielding efforts managed to take the 2nd innings into the 33rd over and all 4 bowlers managed to get on the scoreboard. Andrabi (11-3-21-2) took the first two wickets; a caught and bowled and a catch at slip taken by Matthew Moss, on his return to the side. After his fine performance with both bat and ball in the 2nd XI the week before, Martin Hings was able to dismiss the number 4 batsman and Khan (K) was able to cling on to a good catch to see the back of the remaining North Stainley opener from the bowling of Ali. Umer Khan took the final wicket to fall; caught behind by Andrew Dowson. Batsmen 6 and 7 for North Stainley were able to add the final runs required and achieved victory with a final score of 95-5.
An unfortunate end to a fantastic achievement by Arthington and congratulations to everyone involved. The result need not dampen any spirits as there are many fond performances to look back on. Arthington’s next unbeaten run begins at the ACG next week against South Kilvington.
The 2nd XI did not have a match this week.
The match ball sponsor for the 1st XI game was Simon Eltringham, to whom the club extends its gratitude.
